Position Overview
The Steward plays a critical role in supporting kitchen and dining operations by maintaining a clean, sanitized, and organized work environment. This role ensures all kitchen equipment, dinnerware, cookware, and prep stations meet health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Cleaning & Sanitation
- Clean and sanitize all cookware, dishware, glassware, flatware, and kitchen utensils using manual methods or commercial dishwashers.
- Maintain clean kitchen floors, counters, walls, garbage disposal areas, and food preparation surfaces.
- Regularly empty trash, recycling, and compost bins, ensuring proper disposal practices.
- Perform deep cleaning tasks for heavy kitchen equipment (ovens, fryers, grills, ventilation hoods) as scheduled.
Kitchen & Operational Support
- Assist chefs and kitchen staff with basic food prep tasks (e.g., peeling, washing, chopping ingredients) when required.
- Receive, unload, inspect, and store incoming food shipments and cleaning supplies.
- Keep storage rooms, walk-in refrigerators, and freezers organized and compliant with First-In, First-Out (FIFO) inventory standards.
- Transport clean tableware, utensils, and service equipment to dining or buffet areas.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to local health department guidelines, HACCP standards, and safety regulations.
- Safely handle, dilute, and store chemical cleaning agents according to OSHA / SDS safety guidelines.
- Monitor dishwashing machine temperatures, chemical concentration levels, and report equipment malfunctions immediately.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience: Previous experience in a kitchen, hotel, or food service environment is a plus, but entry-level candidates are often accepted.
- Certifications: Food Handler / SafeServe certification (or willing to obtain upon hire).
- Skills:
- Basic knowledge of sanitation rules and chemical handling safety.
- Strong physical stamina and endurance.
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (8+ hours).
- Ability to lift, push, and carry heavy loads (up to 50 lbs / 23 kg).
- Comfort working in hot, humid, and wet environments near dishwashing machinery and hot ovens.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.
